The solo weekend was pretty good. Saturday AM I went for a bike ride in Auburn w/Jose. He said I looked like a cartoon character on the trail because I was bouncing around and kicking up dust all over the place. Hmm. The singlespeed Bontrager feels like an extension of my arms and legs. It’s perfect.
After the ride I laced E’s mountain bike with some nicer, lighter parts that I had lying around and answered some e-mails for bike parts I put up for sale on craigslist. The parts are starting to fly off the proverbial shelf. It’s nice to see the stuff go to good homes. There’s still no interest in E’s old Kona mountain bike. Anyone want a nice little bike?
After that I watched the Niners get past the Raiders in preseason. I was disappointed to not see much from Randy Moss. Also, I don’t believe in Kerry Collins. Baltimore has that man’s number. Oh, and Alex Smith will be just fine but Rattay looks like he’s ready for the season. Should be a pretty mediocre year for the Bay Area squads.
Today I cleaned the garage and listened to Coltrane. The garage is clean and my mind is clear. I ended up running along the trail at about 6pm. It was so beautiful out that I ended up going longer than intended. 12 miles on the trail and it was effortless. Cross country season starts Saturday in Hayward. I have thoughts of going out hard with the leaders just to see what happens. Foolish?
Oh, and I need addresses from all y’all. E-mail me. I need to get organized with addresses and birthdays and all that. Yes, this is a test to see if anyone is actually reading this.
I’m continuing my introduction to Portland by watching Gus Van Sant films. I watched Elephant tonight while going through old photos. The film was so so. It was just so detached and I never felt connected enough to any of it. It’s supposed to be some kind of statement and about high school and the Columbine killings and how high school changes so quickly from second to second for kids. It felt like I was watching a well-photographed documentary, which I suppose was the goal. I was looking for narrative tonight. I ended up creating my own by going through a box of photos from ’95-’00. I tossed the blurry, bad shots as well as the random photos of unrecognizable characters. House parties broken up by cops, me with a red face, records, friends, bicycles, barbecues, Panama, Ireland, Davis, College Ave, Arch St, Duke Dr, Berkeley, gardens, streets, Sonoma, Oakland, punk showsm art openings/dj gigs. I need to start taking pictures again.
I got an e-mail from our running team about an upcoming race I may be doing. It’s a relay from Calistoga to Santa Cruz. I guess it benefits some kind of organ donor support organization. I’m not big on charity because I think that the state should just provide this kind of thing instead of, say, a multibillion $$ bailout of the airline industry. Anyway, earlier this year my teammate’s 9-year-old daughter was diagnosed with a rare disorder that will cause her kidneys to fail. My teammate is going to donate a kidney to her and some of the team looked into doing the relay as a benefit for them. In a fit of questionable decision making I agreed to do it and then for awhile regretted but now I am really pretty excited about it. I had some misgivings primarily because the whole thing is a little nuts. The race is about 24 hours long and there are 12 people on a team. We’ll separate into 2 vans of 6 runners and a driver and each athlete runs 3 legs of roughly 6 miles spread out throughout the course. One team member said his highlight from last year was eating Top Ramen at Fort Point in SF at 3am. How can I miss that? I figure I won’t get a lot of opportunities to do this kind of thing when I’m actually in shape to do it. So, October 15-6 I plan to be out there all night with the Force of Orange. Yeeeeah.
Did I mention that the Delta Breeze picked up? It's been in the low 90s and gorgeous. I'm pretty into living here right now...
I'm out like trout.
