I Am NOT A Fashion God

That Michael Brown jack-ass former FEMA director displayed some amazing cluelessness in the aftermath. I mean, come on, sending out e-mails asking for someone to dogsit? Jeezus.

Tonight's geography-themed playlist is something like this:

Live Oak - Charlie Hunter Trio
The Bay feat. The Poets Of Rhythm - Lyrics Born
Hollywood Freaks - Beck
California Love - Tupac
California Dreaming - Mamas & Papas
West Bay Invitational - Jawbreaker
Burnin' Hot in Cali - Latyrx
California - Rogue Wave
California Babylon - The Transplants
Tony Gets Drunk In Pedro - The Minutemen
Lodi - Creedence Clearwater Revival
Califlower (Spiddyocks Go West) - Digable Planets
California Stars - Billy Bragg & Wilco
California Sun - The Ramones
I Remember California - R.E.M.
Luv N' Haight - Sly & The Family Stone
LAUSD - Jurassic 5
California Über Alles - Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy

It was inspired by the Rogue Wave song that's up in there. On the freeway in the middle of the afternoon today I was listening to that song and started thinking about how many songs have been written that have the golden state as the title, a theme, the focus or the setting. This is just a little list, really. I'm sure there a lot more since I put that together in about 3 minutes so I could listen to something while washing dishes.

Speaking of the Golden State, go Warriors! I live in Sacramento but the Warriors are my team. There, I said it. I think a lot of us Warrior fans will surface this season as the team makes a playoff run.

I wanna check out the illustrated version of Strunk and White's _Elements of Style_. Maira Kalman, widow of graphic design maniac extraordinaire Tibor, used her wonderful illustrations to take the book in a new, rad direction.

The other day I learned something about hip hop from NPR. Granted, it was Oliver "O-Dub" Wang reviewing an album of Motown remixes and O-Dub is a hip hop journalist of the highest degree, but still. I think I must be getting old if I look to NPR for music. By the way, I heard about that Kalman book on NPR, too. Hmmmph.

Beers. Have I mentioned how much I really enjoy a cold Mendocino Brewing Company Blue Heron Ale? Smooth.

I have a bit of knee pain. My favorite shoe falls apart every 3 weeks. Other shoes make my body hurt. Dilemma.

Wolf is in Uganda.

I'm out like trout.

We're Going to a Party, It's Your Party

Sunday evening seems to be the routine for the blog. I'll try to check in once during the week. Tonight's soundtrack is provided by Elliot Smith, Bright Eyes, the new Rogue Wave LP, King Tee, and Jay-Z. The fucked up thing about using an older laptop to control iTunes and blog at the same time is that sometimes the slow processor gets hung up. Like right now if I hit the shift key it momentarily stops the sound card. I'm getting this weird staccato effect on Bright Eyes' "Landlocked Blues". I tried to rock it on beat like a dj mixer, but to no avail. Not funky.

If you haven't checked in over there lately, I suggest hitting up the blog at bringdownbush.org. Jeremy is experiencing some pretty amazing things down in Algiers. As the corporate media spends less and less time focusing on the area, the vultures are swooping in to take advantage of the situation. There's new action daily on the site.

Yesterday's Tamalpa XC Challenge went well. By my count there were 11 former UCDavis runners in the field of 70 or so. Excellent showing by the fellas and it was extra cool to have a beer (provided by the race organizers!!!) after and catch up a bit. Hopefully we'll get to that a little more after next week's PA Championships in Golden Gate Park. Oh, and much props to my Fleet Feet teammates and pit crew who changed a blowout on the Mazda in minutes, on I-80 at 8am on the way to the race. Well oiled machine. By the way, I got 26th overall and I was pretty happy with that. I ran about 5:33 pace. I am looking forward to next week.

Today I did a nice 12-miler in the morning and almost nothing else the rest of the day. The Niners won so that was nice and The Night Train, my fantasy team, improved to 5-3.

Also, something has been driving me a little crazy. Please please please e-mail me if you know the answer to this tidbit of hip hop trivia. In 1989 Kool Moe Dee sampled a classic funk song that had been a popular breakdancing cut in the 70s and early 80s. Moe Dee used the horns for the chorus of his "Golddigger"-type cut called "They Want Money". I want that song title and I can't find it. I used to to know the name, and I think I might even have the original record, but what's it called? Damn!

On Thanksgiving morning I will be attempting a PR in the mildly sleep deprived road 10k. Lyrics Born will be performing the night before at harlow's in Sac. I can't really stand missing the show since he'll be rocking with a full funk band. Should be good. And speaking of LB, "I said goodbye-eye!"
