The Relay and Other Business
I swear I blink and 10 days pass since my last post. Crazy.
Things have been going pretty well around here. I did that big old Calistoga to Santa Cruz relay race last weekend while a couple of friends ran well at the Humboldt Redwoods Half Marathon in Arcata. Initially I had been a little bummed about missing the race in Arcata but now I am glad I chose the relay.

The Relay was great. It's a complicated race that I don't feel like explaining right now, but let me just say that my favorite part was hanging out in the van with all of the funny people on my team. My second favorite part was running across the Golden Gate at 3:30am under a full moon and clear skies. My third favorite part was looking at the side of our van where we had marked the 100+ teams we had passed from the start. We got 6th overall out of 270 starters. The whole event is sort of like a slumber party for adults. It's really wholesome because you can't get drunk while you're out there and everyone is trying to conserve a little energy for their next run. It's also totally silly because you sleep very little over the course of 22+ hours. I slept about two hours Saturday night and still had to run up a very steep section of Highway 9 the next morning. Next year The Relay will be in April. I'll definitely be down to do it again.
My friend asked if I want to be his teaching assistant for a class next spring. That got me thinking about my spring plans and I realized that I don't have any. That in turn got me thinking that maybe I should run a marathon, maybe the Rock N Roll in June. I'm not getting any younger and the additional aerobic base would help me lose some weight and increase my overall race times. This is really the first time I have thought seriously about the distance. I feel pretty strongly that you have to respect that race. I don't want to be a 5-hour marathon finisher. I know it's a little snobby, but if I run a marathon I will be racing and I will be running 100+ weeks to get there. Finishing is not enough of a goal. It's an obviously grueling event and I want to be prepared. So I need to think a little more about committing to something like this. I should talk to my coach, too.
Jeremy is about to arrive in New Orleans, in fact he should have driven in some time earlier this evening. He has already begun posting his experiences at "bringdownbush.org/blog". He's got a couple of really great stories and I'm happy he decided to drive out there. He's a fabulous storyteller and excellent writer. Add those qualities to his ability to feel comfortable talking to anyone and I am anticipating some great upcoming posts.
I owe Jim a couple playlists but the hecticness of life has impeded my progress, so here's a quick something. He probably won't like all of these songs, but this is where my head's at:
"Ducky Boy" Jurassic 5 and DJ Babu
"I Want You Back (Z-Trip Remix)" The Jackson 5
"Ride The Fence" The Coup
"Just To Get A Rep" Gangstarr
"Six Days" DJ Shadow
"Black Milk" Massive Attack
"Seafoamgreen" Jawbreaker
"Range Life" Pavement
"Marley Marl Scratch" Marley Marl + MC Shan
"Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos" Public Enemy
"Love Bizarre" Sheila E
